Intrathecal Drug Delivery

An intrathecal pump delivers micro-doses of medication directly into the spinal fluid — powerful relief at a fraction of the oral dose, without the systemic side effects of high-dose oral medication.

What the visit looks like

  1. 1

A trial dose through a spinal injection confirms the therapy works for you before any implant.

  2. 2

The pump — about the size of a hockey puck — is implanted under the skin of the abdomen in an outpatient procedure.

  3. 3

Refills happen in clinic every few months via a simple needle port; dosing is programmable and adjustable.

Recovery & results

Light restrictions for a few weeks after implant. Because dosing is a fraction of oral equivalents, many patients think more clearly and feel more like themselves.

Common questions

Delivering medication directly to the spinal fluid can achieve equal or better relief at roughly 1/100th of the oral dose — meaning fewer systemic side effects.
